Try these tips and tricks to enhance your tasting experiences.
Smell Everything
- Not just mezcal. Practice identifying aromas and flavors with everything, taking a moment to appreciate the experience of your senses.
Smell Mezcal Gently
- Smell the mezcal before you sip. Bring it towards your nose slowly, sniffing lightly until you pick up smells. If you rush in, the alcohol’s burning sensation can overwhelm your senses.
Hand Rub
- Pour a few drops of mezcal into your palm and rub your hands together to evaporate the alcohol. Once they’re almost dry, cup your face with your hands and take a deep breath to smell the mezcal’s oils without the alcohols.
Besos de Mezcal
- “Kiss the mezcal”. Sip the first drops of mezcal like you would a hot tea or coffee. Breathe after sipping to evaporate the alcohol in your mouth more quickly.
Separate Your Senses
- Consider the aromas and flavors independently. How does the smell differ from your first sip, or from what lingers? Savor it patiently, and take a moment to gather your thoughts before noting.
